For question from 1 to 5, four options are given. One of them is the correct answer. Make your choice (1, 2, 3 or 4).

Jake was afraid of birds. If a bird came anywhere near him, his hands would shake and his legs would feel wobbly. Birds seen from a distance were fine and even those seen close up in a cage were all right, as long as he did not have to look too closely at their beady eyes.

One day, the class was going on an excursion to a wildlife park. Their teacher told them about one of its well-known features, a huge aviary you could walk through and where tame birds would come close to you. Jake was worried but he realised that he had to face his fears.

It began well and he enjoyed the journey in the bus. When they reached the aviary, Jake was terrified that if he went in he would collapse in a heap and make a fool of himself. He let all the other pupils and teachers go in. He was standing outside the gate trying to pluck up his courage. Suddenly, he felt someone touch him. It was his teacher. She looked at him for a few seconds and then asked him if he would mind helping her carry the lunch boxes from the bus to the picnic area. Jake was lost for words. He could not believe his good luck. He looked up at her and nodded in approval. He was relieved that he was called upon to help out. He carefully carried the boxes from the bus to the picnic area, skilfully avoiding the aviary.

When Jake's friends saw him, they asked why he was not at the aviary. He quickly chirped that he had helped to carry the lunch boxes and that he could not leave the food and walk away. His friends agreed and grabbed their lunch as they were hungry after all the activities. Justin, Jake's best friend, came up to him and winked at him as he was the only one who knew about Jake's fear.

It was a journey down memory lane for Mr Tan. He had come from China fifty years ago and had never gone back since. He used to tell us how he had left China to work as a coolie in Malaya. The girl he wanted to marry had rejected him because he was poor and he could not face her anymore. Out of embarrassment, he had never gone back to his village. He also lived the life of a bachelor, earning, spending and helping others. Those of us living in the same block with him loved him as he had a kind heart and was selfless.

Now that he was eighty years old, he wanted to go home. He then asked us to accompany him on an all-expenses-paid trip to China. My sister and I jumped at the chance. We were all excited for that was our first trip to China.

We arrived at a town and put up at the best hotel we could find. It was not exactly a five-star hotel but the room was clean and comfortable. The next mroning, we hired a car which took us to Mr Tan's village where he made a large donation to the village school building fund.

The simple village folks were so kind and eager to share whatever little they had with us that they made us feel ashamed. Mr Tan was a happy man.

When we arrived back at the hotel, Mr Tan said, "If I die, please cremate me here." We assured him that nothing of that sort would happen. However, Mr Tan just shook his head and smiled sadly.
