For each question from 1 to 10, four options are given. One of them is the correct answer. Make your choice (1, 2, 3 or 4).

Kate rushed to pick up Wuffy as her father arrived.

"Not again?" Father asked as he saw the mess in the living room. Not looking the least bit surprised, he looked at his daughter holding her pet puppy purchased a few months ago. The house had always been spick-and-span before Wuffy's arrival.

Kate's parents had always been against Kate keeping a pet. Although Kate was a neat and responsible child, they felt that she was too young. "It is a lot of hard work!" was their repeated advice whenever Kate brought up her wish on her birthday. As a result, she could only adopt a puppy and keep it with the shopkeeper, visiting and feeding it after school every day. Wuffy was chosen and it barked excitedly every time it saw her. Kate found it difficult to concentrate on her work as she missed Wuffy too much. Seeing her overwhelmed with longing each day, Kate's parents decided that she could bring Wuffy home eventually. "However, if you cannot handle it well, it will have to go," they had said.

At first, no one noticed Wuffy much. It followed Kate everywhere and seemed to obey her commands. However, it started to be bolder in the house as time passed. It would jump onto the tables and chairs, mess up the laundry basket, and it soon filled the place with non-stop barking. Kate always had a reason for each of Wuffy's misbehaviour but it was clear that she was at her wits' end too.

The last straw came when Wuffy knocked down Mother's precious crystal vase. "I've had enough of this dog!" cried Mother, the tinge of frustration clearly in her voice as she cleaned up the mess. Father had appeared at that moment and Kate hugged Wuffy protectively.

She feared the worst to come.

  1. His house was usually messy.
  2. He was used to Wuffy creating a mess.
  3. Kate had told him about the mess before he reached home.

3.
Why did Kate's parents allow Wuffy to stay with them?
  1. Kate loved Wuffy very much and wanted to train it.
  2. Kate promised to care for it despite her young age.
  3. Kate kept thinking of Wuffy and could not focus on her work.
  4. Kate found it a waste of time to have to visit her pet at the shop.
4.
The word "It" in line 6 refers to ________________________.
  1. caring for a pet
  2. Kate being young
  3. buying a pet for Kate
  4. cleaning up the mess in the living room
5.

Everyone in the village disliked the moneylender. Although he was the wealthiest man there, he was stingy and nasty to those who borrowed money from him. However, the villagers had no choice but to go to him.

One day, the moneylender set out for the house of a poor farmer who had owed him money. The farmer had worked very hard, but still could not repay his debt. "If I can't get every penny from that good-for-nothing," grumbled the moneylender to himself, "I'll teach him a lesson."

When the moneylender arrived at the house, he met a young boy playing in the dirt outside. "Child, where are your parents?" the moneylender asked impatiently.

The boy kept on playing, paying no attention to the man.

"Where are they?" the moneylender repeated, raising his voice at the boy.

The boy just looked up at him and smiled. This enraged the moneylender who then growled at him, "I'll give you a beating if you don't tell me where they are!"

Despite the threat, the boy remained tight-lipped. The moneylender was determined to find out where his parents were and decided to try a different approach. "Now listen to me," he said more gently. "I came by today to get the money your parents owe me. But if you tell me where they are and what they're doing, I promise I would not ask for a penny from them."

Upon hearing the moneylender's promise, the boy then turned to him and wittily revealed that his parents were just at the backyard of their house. It soon dawned on the moneylender that he had been tricked by the boy and had to pay the price for his foolishness.
