Once upon a time in China, there were no rivers and lakes. There was only the Eastern Sea in which lived four dragons: the Long Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Black Dragon and the Pearl Dragon.

One day, a terrible drought swept through the land. People did not have enough food to eat as crops withered. The dragons felt sorry and wanted to help the people.

The dragons flew to the sea, scooped up water in their mouths, and then flew back into the sky, where they sprayed the water out over the earth. Going back and forth, the four dragons darkened the sky. Before long, the sea water became rain pouring down from the sky.

"It's raining! It's raining! The crops will be saved!" the people cried and leaped with joy.

However, the Jade Emperor in Heaven was enraged. "How dare the four dragons bring rain without my permission!" he exclamined. He ordered the Mountain God to imprison the dragons, each under a high mountain. The Mountain God used his magic power to get four mountains to press down upon the four dragons.

Although imprisoned, the dragons did not regret their actions. Determined to do good for the people forever, they returned themselves into four rivers, which flowed down from the mountains, across land and into the sea.

Hence, China's four great rivers were formed -- the Black Dragon River in the north, the Yellow River in central China, and the Long and Pearl Rivers in the south.

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Dan was hiking through the Canadian woods one cold morning when it suddenly started snowing heavily, adding to the thick layer already on the ground.

When it finally stopped snowing, disaster struck. A rock hidden by the deep snow caught Dan's ankle and he fell to the ground. He lay there, umable to pull himself up as every attempt to move was like a stab in his flesh. He was extremely cold and was starting to feel tired. However, he knew that if he fell asleep in the snow, he would most certainly die from the cold.

A tree stirred ahead. From within the branches, a puma was watching Dan. A puma is a powerful cat with claws that could shred Dan into strips. It slowly approached Dan. Dan noticed the animal. He looked away in fear and dismay as he prepared himself for the worst.

However, instead of moving in for the kill, the puma gently lay down across Dan's chest and limbs. Soon, the warmth of the animal reached Dan and he began to feel better. From time to time, the puma pressed its muzzle against Dan and rocked his head gently. Clearly, the puma knew that Dan must not fall asleep.

They remained like that for several hours until Dan and the puma heard voices. A rescue team was approaching. As quietly and gently as it had appeared, the puma rose and slunk off back among the trees.
