Suddenly, they heard a loud bang. The television screen went blank and the lights went out. It was pitch dark! Ron cried and clung to Mrs Tan tightly. Mrs Tan carried him and comforted him gently. Mary ran to the door and looked at the blocks of flats nearby. "All the lights in our neighbours' homes are out too! What has happened?" She asked.

"Don't worry. It must be a blackout," said Mr Tan.

Mr Tan felt his way to the kitchen and came back with two lighted candles, which he put on the table. Just then, their neighbour, Mr Ravi, knocked on the door. He had come to borrow some candles and matches from them. Mrs Ravi was not at home and he did not know where she had kept the candles and matches.

Susan put away the chess set and her mother closed the book. "I am sure the blackout will be over soon," said Mrs Tan. "Until then, we can take a rest and relax."
