When he woke up, Alan felt like he was in an oven. His shirt was soaked with perspiration and his hair was matted to his forehead. Knowing that it was impossible to continue sleeping in the heat, he packed his belongings and walked out of the shed in the forest. He was astonished by the number of stars in the sky.

There was a stream nearby. Alan took the opportunity to wash his dirt-crusted face. He felt refreshed after that. Leaving his bicycle behind, Alan continued his journey. The brakes had become faulty and he did not want to take the risk. Soon, he came to a very tall fence with barbed wire on top.

"Even if I can climb over the fence, I might be severely cut by the wire," Alan thought to himself.

As Alan thought about what he should do next, a squirrel suddenly appeared, seemingly from the other side of the fence. Alan scrutinised the fence and found a spot where the bottom of the fence had been gnawed through. He squeezed throught it carefully.

Alan saw a path on the other side of the fence and decided to follow it. It was a rugged path that led him through a thick forest of trees. His body was aching from all the walking and his backpack felt like a big rock on his back.

With some persistence, Alan came to the end of the path. It ended next to a river. To his surprise, there was a raft on the back of the river. Hurriedly, Alan got into the raft and paddled downstream where he had arranged to meet his friends. A sense of relief came over him. With this mode of transport, he would reach his destination in half the time.

Section I

Read the passage below and answer questions 1 to 5.
Your answer must be based on the passage.
Answer in complete sentences.

In ancient times, when the Roman Empire ruled over most of Europe, public entertainment was provided in huge venues. One of the most famous places was the Colosseum in Rome.

An enthusiastic crowd would gather to watch the fight involving a group of people known as gladiators who were slaves or criminals. The Romans also captured people and made them gladiators.

Gladiators were trained to fight at special schools where they were fed three meals a day and given medical attention when needed. Training included using different weapons such as war chains, nets and daggers. They were taught techniques that would injure their opponents rather than kill them.

A large crowd would gather to watch the fight. Some gladiators fought one-to-one, while others fought in groups. Some had to fight wild animals like lions. Many gladiators died or were seriously wounded during the contests. The crowd would go wild with excitement when a gladiator was wounded.

If an injured gladiator felt he was defeated, he would raise his left hand with one finger extended. This was to ask for mercy. The crowd would then decide whether the wounded gladiator should be spared by signalling with their thumbs up or thumbs down.

The winners would receive a golden bowl or a crown as a prize. To symbolise their victory, a palm leaf would be presented to them. In addition, their supporters would shower them with expensive gifts and cheer loudly for them.
